All common sense had exited Charlie’s brain. He wanted to wrap his arms around Lizzie and plant a kiss on her that she’d never forget. But he’d hate himself tomorrow if he played with her emotions. He really needed to stop with the wishy washy. He needed to be either on or off the relationship ride. Charlie sighed and tuned back in to Henry’s chatter.

Henry droned on about the local farmer’s market. “I told my wife, Vera, that Jeremy should enter his tomatoes in the county fair, but do think that boy will listen to his granddad? Of course not.”

Lizzie’s leg pressed against Charlie, sending a zip of electricity through him. He attempted to tamp down his attraction, but the close quarters made it difficult.

“How old is your grandson?” Lizzie asked.

“He had his thirtieth birthday a few months ago. The whole family got together for a spring picnic. We had a ball.” Henry lifted his cap and wiped his brow.

“Sounds like you have a close family.” Lizzie shifted, leaning closer into Charlie.

He stiffened but failed to recover before she noticed.

She shot him a confused glance.

“Yes, little lady, we do. The missus and I are blessed to have three amazing grown children. They all married wonderful spouses and have given us a passel of grands.”

“How long have you been married?” Charlie had no idea where that question had come from. Apparently, his mouth and head had lost their connection. The last thing he wanted to talk about was marriage and what he couldn’t have.

“Fifty-five years next month. Best years of my life.”

Charlie longed for what Henry had, a long happy marriage. He glanced at Lizzie. Strands of her brown hair had slipped from her ponytail and hung around her face. He took in her beauty. What would it be like to wake up next to her every morning for the rest of his life? He shook off the thought once again.

Henry adjusted the air conditioner in the truck. “You two are a cute couple. Just what people said about me and Vera. When are you planning to tie the knot?”

Charlie’s jaw drop. “We…I…”

“Sorry. The missus always tells me I don’t know when to shut my trap.”

Lizzie gave Charlie a cheesy grin and patted his knee. “We haven’t set a date yet, have we, sweetie?”

She had to be kidding. He glanced at her and saw the twinkle in her eyes, daring him. Little brat. Two could play at this game. He grasped her hand and brought her knuckles to his lips. “Not yet, but I plan to remedy that situation—soon.”

Her pupils dilated and her muscles tightened.

Gotcha.

Henry chuckled. “Yes sirree, just like me and the missus.”

Lizzie narrowed her gaze and tugged her hand from his, and Charlie bit his lip to suppress a smile. “Henry,” Lizzie said. “I can’t thank you enough for giving us a lift.”

“No trouble at all.” The older man turned onto Main Street and headed toward the restaurant.

Charlie pointed to a small parking lot a block from Bobby T’s. “Right over there will be great.
